A night light has one job: show you the floor without waking you up. Three choices decide how well it does that.
Color
Red light is the gentlest at night. It lets you see the edge of the bed and the door without the glare that makes you squint, and it is our first pick for a bedroom.
Blue and cool white read more clearly in a hallway, a bathroom or on the stairs, where you want to see the edge of a step. Multicolor is for a child who likes to watch it change.
Sensor
A dusk-to-dawn night light turns on when the room gets dark and stays on all night. It is the right kind for a hallway you want lit until morning.
A motion night light stays dark until someone walks past, then lights for about 25 seconds. It suits stairs, closets and landings you pass through, and it will not light a sleeping room all night.

Where to plug it in
- Low on the wall, so the light falls on the floor and not in your eyes.
- Away from a room lamp or a window. A light sensor that sees another light will keep the night light off.
- At least a meter apart when you use two sensor night lights, so one does not switch the other off.
- Not behind a curtain, a bed or a pile of laundry.
When to take one out of the wall
A night light is a small electrical device that runs every night for years, and it deserves a check now and then. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled night lights from other makers for this reason.
The night lights can overheat, posing a fire hazard.

- Unplug a night light that smells hot, smokes, or has a cracked case.
- Unplug one that has been stepped on or knocked out of the wall.
- Check cpsc.gov for recalls if you have night lights from other brands in the house.
